My Mother, My Shadow

My Mother, My Shadow

Overview

“When you become the sun, shadows disappear”

House of Us is an evolving work in progress, an autobiographical, multi-dimensional piece that blends an immersive meta-theatrical journey with an intimate visual diary. My Mother, My Shadow: Fragments from House of Us, is a loving celebration of my mother, Natasha Parry, who passed away in 2015. The first iteration opened in Palermo in September 2021 and was then reimagined for the atmospheric Casa dei Tre Oci Museum in Venice, debuting there in November 2022, produced by Teatro Goldoni.

Ahead of this, Electro Studios invited me to share some fragments of House of Us in a more intimate gallery setting. This led to My Mother, My Shadow, an exhibition featuring paintings, photography, and multimedia works—all inspired by my inherited sense of invisibility as a daughter, a woman, and an artist. My mother’s loneliness and her lifelong search for meaning, wrapped in her deep love for theatre, took on various forms throughout the gallery. I’ve always seen my father as a bright, sunny figure, while my mother was the moon. Over the past few years, I’ve reflected on my orbit between them, delving into the moon side. I have begun to understand my mother through writing, painting, and photography, and explored what it feels like to be invisible and voiceless as a woman. I find myself fascinated by my own shadow and how it connects to hers.

Future collaborations for House of Us are planned with the SPAC theatre in Japan and the Louvre Museum in Lens, France.
