Directing Gioachino Rossini’s “Cinderella” at the Wrocław Opera in April 2017 was an incredibly rewarding experience, especially as it marked my first work in Poland. This production, created in collaboration with Théâtre des Champs Elysées, allowed me to explore Rossini’s music in a new way.

Rossini’s music is not only memorable, but also deeply heartfelt. In relation to the libretto, it reaches some mysterious depths. In a strange way, it combines with a cheerful story of a comedic nature, creating a complete work. For me, it is not just a funny story straight from a fairy tale – Cinderella is a story with a timeless message. It says a lot about the human condition and the rules governing society.

I had the pleasure of working with an exceptional creative team, including Italian conductor Matteo Pagliari, set designer Noëlle Ginefri Corbel, costume designer Anna Sekuła, choreographer Martin Buczko, and lighting designer Grzegorz Barszczewski. It was also a privilege to work in Wrocław, the city of Jerzy Grotowski, who was a friend and collaborator of my father, Peter Brook. Being in this city felt like a special connection, as I was bringing my own work to a place rich in theatre history.

The performances featured talented soloists from the Wrocław Opera, including Katarzyna Haras-Kruczek, Joanna Moskowicz, and Jadwiga Postrożna, alongside wonderful guest artists like Aleksandra Opał and Leonardo Ferrando. Together, we brought this timeless story to life, inviting audiences to experience both the humor and depth of this beloved opera.

The production was highly successful and toured extensively between 2003-2022, with the same basic concept adapted for each venue.
